NANNUP
NANNUP SPEEDWAY
In 1966 a group of Nannup locals got together to form a Car Club. In the first year the club held mainly Car Trials and Hill Climbs in registered road cars. They formed a strong alliance with the Bunbury Car Club and supported each others clubs.
In 1967 a purpose built race track was built next to the Town Oval with local transport company R&N Palmers playing a big part in the construction.
Most Sedans racing at the time were Holdens while some drivers experimented with various British cars trying to find an edge.
In 1968 Nannup hosted the South West Championships. The winner of that title was John Scott in a Citroen front wheel drive car with local Andy Della in second place. The Championship was contested over a 25 lap feature.
Racing at Nannup continued through until 1972 when a recession hit the area and many of the members had to leave the town for work reasons.
Alec Bornatici
Alec was the local handyman to the local speedway racers, with steel fabrication and welding skills he built many of the roll cages of the day. He would also transport 3 race cars at a time on his truck to other South West race meetings.
