KATANNING
1959 THE INCEPTION
It was on the 21st of April 1959 that Katanning entered the motor racing scene. This is the day the Katanning TQ Car Club was formed.
Office bearers for the first year were:
George Haplin: President
Ted Thompson: Vice President
M Escott: Secretary Treasurer
Five committee members were also elected:
Reg Escott, Reg Newbey, Ron Yeldon, Barry Mills and Stan Hobart.
Subscriptions for the first season were set at one pound one shilling per member.
At this meeting it was resolved that six TQ’S would be built as soon as possible, the members commited to building these cars were: Messrs Escott, Collins, Haldine, Flugge, PL Bolto and Wakes Garage.
1959 KATANNING AROUND THE HOUSES
The first TQ race meeting organized by the Katanning TQ Car Car Club was a road race meeting around the streets of Katanning. The course was triangular, bounded by Clive St, Beaufort St and Albion St. A number of drivers from around the state nominated for the first race meeting.
Local Katanning drivers were: R Swindells, G Flugge, R Escott, Bill Newbey, R Newbey, H Hicks, E Moore, E McAuliffe, A Caldwell, M Dennis, D Thompson and I Bolto. Some of these drivers shared a car. Although the visiting drivers took out most of the honours, local drivers watched by a large and appreciative crowd acquitted themselves well and gained considerable experience.
1960 KATANNING AROUND THE HOUSES
The WA TQ road racing championships were scheduled to be held on the Katanning street circuit on the 26th of March 1960 . Due to heavy rain only 2 races were completed and the remainder of the meeting had to be cancelled. These titles were held in Kojanup at a later date.
O'CALLAGHAN PARK
Members of the Katanning TQ Car Club put a considerable amount of work into establishing a dirt track speedway in Katanning. The first race meeting was held on the 10th of January 1960. Hot Rods raced on the track for the first time when 7 competitors came from Perth to race in May of 1964. Marshall Motors donated a 1940 Chevrolet to the club which was rebuilt by Derry Bairstow and Jimmy Heard of Dumbleyung to make the car safe. The drivers were then given a chance to drive and see who could roll the car.
In March 1965 the decision was made to change the Katanning TQ Car Club name to the Katanning Speedway Club. A constitution was then drawn up.
Speedway was first held in the centre of the horse galloping track. The speedway was built and run by the Katanning Speedway club and operated separate to the horse racing club. The speedway club ran its own gate and canteens up until the Katanning speedway was built on the Dumbleyung road .
