GILLMAN SPEEDWAY
Gillman Speedway came about as the result of the closure of the nearby North Arm Speedway in March 1977.
The President of the Speedway Riders Association of South Australia Inc, David Parker inspected many sites and with the help of Motorcycling SA President Ivan Golding, decided to move to the Heini Becker Park Motorsport Complex at Gillman.
Using Dolomite from the old North Arm track and old tyres for a Safety Fence, a 213 metre track was created in the Moto Cross car park with the first official practice held on Sunday 19 October 1997.
In May 1998 a 400 metre track was completed incorporating the smaller track.
November 1999 temporary lights were installed and this led to the first night meeting when the South Australian Solo Championship was run.
Year 2000 saw the tracks levelled and the current day 295 metre track successfully opened on Australia Day in 2001 with the staging of the Jack Young Solo Cup and the Harry Denton Memorial Shield for Sidecars.
In the winter of 2006 Rowley Park Speedway promoter Kym Bonython opened the newly built infield JuniorTrack.
Generous Sponsors and dedicated Club Members, along with the patronage of loyal spectators has seen many improvements to the venue including connection to the power grid, permanent lighting, a grandstand, viewing mounds, food and drink outlets and a windbreak fence on the western side.
Gillman Speedway is very young - great events and opportunities await...
Thanks to Graeme Frost for his input.
