WEST AUSTRALIAN AMATEUR SPEEDWAY ASSOCIATION
Bentley Nursery & Kent Street Weir Tracks
Speedway Cycle Racing in Perth was controlled by the West Australian Amateur Speedway Association and was heavily influenced by Speedway Solo racing. As some of the names indicate, the young riders were either from speedway families or they would go on to become latter day Champions.
The Teams of the day were:
Bentley Boomerangs, Welshpool Rangers, Bentley Aces, Shenton Park Tigers, Wembly Lions, Bayswater Flashes, Manning Marlons, Manning Magpies and South Perth Saints.
One of those riders who rode for the Welshpool Rangers was Les Sharpe. Les has allowed us to put up his private photo collection of the 1958 period. All of the photos have been taken at the Bentley Nursery Track which was owned by the Schoefield family, as well as the Kent Street Weir Track.
At the time Les was 14 years old. He went on to ride Solos at Claremont and Bibra Lake with huge success so much so that Aub Lawson arranged for Les to travel to England and ride for the Halifax Test Team.
Another of the riders pictured is Ron Tilby, son of Mick Tilby one of Claremont Speedway directors. Trevor Hobbs was another rider who went on to race until he lost his life in a Solo race accident at the Claremont Showgrounds.
