BUNBURY CITY SPEEDWAY
BUNBURY CAR CLUB
With the closure of Blicks Raceway the Bunbury Car Club found itself without a racetrack. Many sites were considered including, part of the Hay Park Sporting Complex, farmland off Treendale Road Australind, farmland off SouthWest Highway Waterloo and the present site on North Boyanup Road.
The slideshow below shows the clearing and construction of the North Boyanup Road, Bunbury City Speedway.
22 acres of swampland was filled and built up into a 510 metre arena with banked spectator stands, permanent brick buildings including canteens, toilets, offices and admission boxes. The original intention was to build a daylight racing track.
March 1972 - The Bunbury Car Club obtained the lease of the site.
May 1972 - Colin Resta and George Lane began clearing the site.
The major planners of the venue, Tom Dillon and president of the day John Hudson, soon realised the potential of Bunbury to be a night time international venue. The timber track fence was installed with 'state of the art' pit gates fitted.
Top quality track, spectator and pit lighting was erected.
All 22 acres were utilised with a large pit area and massive car parking provided. In the early years competitor numbers were so great that some racecars had to be pitted in the public parking area, also the public had to angle park on both sides of the North Boyanup Road right back to the airport and south past Lilydale Road. Centenary Road was usually full as well.
